
A BMS State of Health figure is useful. It is not a complete qualification for second-life use.
The percentage can help start a conversation about remaining capacity. It does not, by itself, prove safety, explain the test method, reveal damage history or show whether the battery fits a specific application.
What BMS State of Health can tell you
A battery management system estimates internal states that cannot all be measured directly during normal vehicle operation. Depending on the manufacturer and implementation, its State of Health value may reflect estimated capacity, power capability or a proprietary combination of indicators.
That information has value. It can reveal trends, support maintenance decisions and help screen a large battery population. The limitation is comparability. Two manufacturers may calculate and expose the figure in different ways, and some vehicles do not make it readily available.
Why the dashboard figure can differ from measured capacity
State of Health is an estimate shaped by algorithms, operating history, temperature, calibration and the data available to the BMS. A 2026 preprint analysing 1,114 electric vehicles across five manufacturers found that BMS-reported State of Health did not consistently track independently measured capacity. The authors describe this as emerging evidence and call for manufacturer-independent validation.
One study does not make every BMS figure wrong. It shows why a buyer should understand what the number represents before treating it as a guarantee. The relevant question is whether the evidence is sufficient for the intended decision.
Second-life qualification needs several evidence layers
A robust assessment can combine:
- Battery identity, chemistry, configuration and traceable origin
- Visual inspection and documented damage or repair history
- Isolation, voltage and fault checks
- Measured usable capacity under a defined procedure
- Internal resistance, cell balance and self-discharge behaviour
- Thermal observations and safety screening
- Comparison with the requirements of the proposed application
The required depth depends on the battery and route. Screening a pack for recycling needs different evidence from qualifying a repeatable batch for stationary storage. Testing should answer a defined buyer or routing question, rather than generate data without a decision attached.
A test report and formal certification are different
A BatteryCentr Active Testing Certificate records the agreed pack identity, test period, measured performance, safety observations and grading outcome. It is a pack-specific test record. It is not a statutory product certification or independent conformity certificate.
Where an onward application requires formal certification, conformity assessment or another third-party document, that scope must be defined separately and coordinated through an appropriately qualified provider. Our testing and grading page explains this distinction.
What buyers should ask for
Buyers should ask what was tested, when it was tested, which equipment and procedure were used, and how the grade connects to their application. A precise report with stated limits is more useful than a confident percentage with no method behind it.
